sushi bay: sushi will always be at the top of my list

continuing on trying all restaurants in vancouver, i decided to try out sushi bay on kingsway which is have passed 3000 times in my life but never felt compelled to try.

my dad really likes bento boxes so thats what we started with:

miso soup: comes with bento box

sushi and sashimi box ($10.99): this had california roll, 3 nigiri and 4 sashimi with tempura, rice and a salad - honestly, i wasn't too impressed with the food here. it tasted good but not amazing as suggested by the high urban spoon ratings.

3/5

seafood lunch box ($9.99); salmon teriyaki, california roll, tempura, rice and salad - again it wasn't expensive or bad, just kind of boring

3/5

awesome roll ($7.95): california roll with bbq salmon ontop and yam strips with a spicy sauce - this was pretty good! but the yam strips weren't crispy like i expected, actually sort of limp…

3.5/5

overall: the food is fine and the prices aren't too high but thats all i can say about the place as nothing was memorable.

good wolfe kitchen and bar: yaletown treasure

travelzoo vouchers are amazing. they give you a full meal for two usually but between me, my mom, and my dad, we always get an extra entree and just share which is the perfect amount! this time we went to good wolfe kitchen and bar in yaletown and the food was absolutely delicious. the meal made it a great price for the amount and quality but the prices aren't too high otherwise.

the voucher we got was $59 and included two entrees, two appetizers and two desserts,

fresh baked bread: it was really soft and fluffy when it came out

1lb mussels and frites ($17): served in a coconut curry broth, these mussels were plump, juicy and so fresh. there was plenty for the 3 of us and my parents claimed it was one of the best they'd ever had
5/5

the fries (with chipotle dip): my dad polished of the very last crumb of these fresh cut fries. he loved them so much because they were crispy but really soft on the inside. they were fresh fried when they came out but i felt a tiny bit over salted.
5/5

dungeness crab cake: lime aioli, brie cheese and pistachio crumble ($16): this was again very delicious. an abundant amount of crab and it was not greasy or over fried at all. it was missing a little bit of the "cake" in crab cake but i actually prefer that over the croquette type breading!
4.75/5

sablefish with sake-soy glaze and soba noodles ($25): this was my favourite dish (although all were 5/5 worthy) because the soba noodles complimented this dish so perfectly. the sable fish was moist and oily, the only way to enjoy sable fish, with an asian glaze and seared perfectly. the noodles were so good too…being not quite hot but mixed with the sauce, was amazing.
5/5

yarrows meadows duck with baby potato and winter vegetables ($26): the duck was cooked to perfection. served with a dijon mustard sauce, it was one of the best dishes i'd ever had. perfectly rare in the middle, the flavour of duck breast just shined in this dish, so good.
5/5

braised short rib risotto with mushrooms ($25): this was super rich and cheesy but so delicious. it was filled with mushrooms and the short rib was break-apart soft. the flavours were perfect, not too salty or bland and there was so much, we had to pack some to go!
5/5

apple cake: a bit sweet and served cold (not the best idea IMO) but it was good and the cream was fresh and light.
4/5

kaffir lime creme brûlée: of the two desserts, this was the better one. the kaffir lime was subtle but helped balance out the sweetness and the creme brûlée itself was smooth and decadent.
5/5

overall: one of the best "european" dinners i've had in vancouver. the food was amazing and portions were MORE THAN ENOUGH. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU TRY THIS PLACE OUT!!

bob likes thai food: and so do i...

after my final exam LAST APRIL (yes, very behind) i met with my mom on main street for our first real thai food experience at bob likes thai food. they have really great lunch specials and in my opinion, delicious food. i've never had thai due to my peanut allergy and fear of contamination but this was so good that now, i will risk my wellbeing for deliciousness!

green curry with chicken ($9): this lunch set came with a tiny salad and wonton crisps but the star was the curry. so delicious not being too creamy and packed with chicken i still think of this curry today. it was spicy but nothing past a mild-medium.
4.5/5

pad thai ($9): the REAL STAR OF THE DAY. this was so very very delicious. i had never had pad thai but the flavours were ohmygosh good. i read online that lots of restaurants use ketchup but this was NOT ketchup. i at least can taste that. and it was not clumpy or too wet either. it had a decent amount of shrimp, tofu and eggs and was a pretty big portion for lunch size!
5/5

maw-gang - taro root, coconut, egg and palm sugar ($3): wanting to end on a sweet note, we ordered dessert being adventurous and it was worth it. the maw gang tasted like a custard/pudding/jello but wasn't too sweet and had a creamy consistency but wasn't runny. the taste of coconut and egg were prominent to me (since I'm not sure what taro root tastes like) but this delicious and reminded me that i should try more new things in my food adventures!

overall: my first experience with thai food was an amazing one. it was delicious, huge portions, good prices (lunch specials even on weekends!) and just a wonderful meal.
